Huoshan Park
Starting point. Built in 1875 as Wayside Park. After 1939 this was one of the few green spaces refugees were permitted to enter — children played here, old men sat singing in Yiddish. A bronze memorial inside, erected in 1994, carries trilingual inscriptions: German, Hebrew, Chinese. Sit for five minutes before walking on.
Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum
Walk 200 m west to 62 Changyang Road — the former Ohel Moshe Synagogue, built in 1907 by Russian Jews. From 1939 to 1945 it was the spiritual centre of the refugee community. The 'Shanghai Ark' memorial wall carries 13,732 names. The full visit takes 30–45 minutes; head north when you come out — that's Zhoushan Road.
Zhoushan Road · core of the refugee quarter
Step out of the museum and head north — that's Zhoushan Road. This was the most 'European' street in all of Hongkou: numbers 59, 79, 116 once held cafés, barbershops, bakeries; painted-over outlines of German signage still show on the walls. At No. 86, the iron channel for the old Café Vienna signboard still sits above the door — squint and you can make out the faint 'WIEN'. Walk down Zhoushan to the Kunming Road junction, then turn west 150 m for the final stop.
Xiahai Temple
Endpoint. The 'Xiahai' in this temple's name is the true source of 'Shanghai' as a place name — fishermen built it during the Qianlong era of the Qing to pray for safe passage; the area was once a fishing village called Xiahaipu. The main hall was rebuilt in the 1990s; the stone lions out front are original. Stepping out of the Jewish refugee story to sit in front of this older fishermen's temple — two histories that didn't know each other lived side by side in this neighbourhood for decades. The 1939 refugees probably walked past these very gates.
