Stops in order
Middle Urumqi Road Wet Market
The walk doesn't start at Wukang Road. Begin with breakfast at the Wuzhong market — this is daily life for residents, not a photo op.
Lane 288, Wuyuan Road
A 1930s 'new-style' shikumen lane. The pebble-dash characters '安和邨' are still on the wall at the entrance. Cut through here to bypass the crowds at the front of the Normandie Apartments.
105 Hunan Road
Hunan Villa — former home of banker Zhou Zuomin. In 1948 Claire Chennault (of Flying Tigers fame) married Anna Chan here. The wall is low enough to glimpse the French mansard roof from the street.
52 Yongfu Road
The former British Consul-General's residence in Shanghai, now Cha House tea room. The trees in the courtyard pre-date 1937 and are original.
147 West Fuxing Road · Ke Ling's House
A Spanish-style apartment building. The writer Ke Ling lived here from 1959 to 2000; his south-facing third-floor study overlooks the second row of plane trees.
Lane 5, Gaoyou Road
End of the walk. Lai Shaoqi's former residence sits inside this lane, which to this day has no iron gate — walk all the way to the back and you'll see enamel washtubs and laundry lines.
