Stops in order
Lane 211, Xinhua Road
Start here. Designed in 1925 by Hungarian architect László Hudec and American Elliott Hazzard. Twenty garden villas line the lane, no two identical — Shanghainese still call it the 'Foreign Lane'.
36 Lane 329, Xinhua Road
A round villa: exposed red brick under a double-pitched roof of green glazed tile, said to have been the home of the Japanese merchant Sakai. Peer through the gap in the wall and you can just see the oval inner courtyard.
60 Panyu Road · Hudec's Former Residence
László Hudec's own house, built in 1930 in English country half-timbered style. Now the Hudec Memorial Hall — quietest on weekday afternoons.
Xingfuli · Fahuazhen Road
Xingfuli is just the entry point. Keep walking north along Fahuazhen Road and you'll find 1960s workers' housing standing wall-to-wall with 1930s villas.
Fuyuan Road Wet Market
End of the walk. A small market tucked inside the Xinhua villa district. It closes at 11 a.m., selling pickled mustard root and lees brine — staples for the local elderly.
